DataMac CE – Mobile Off-Highway Equipment
DataMac CE is a subscription service that tracks annual demand for replacement parts used in mobile off-highway construction equipment. In 2001, MacKay & Company’s detailed study of the aftermarket for 10 types of off-highway construction equipment (DataMac CE) included skid steers and tractor backhoes. In 2001, these two types of equipment represented just under $1.5 billion dollar aftermarket opportunity at the point of final sale (retail).
MacKay & Company was approached by equipment manufacturers to complete another detailed study of the large aftermarket associated with the operating population of skid steers and tractor backhoes in the United States. Given the large aftermarket opportunity associated with these two types of construction equipment, MacKay & Company agreed that was time to take another look at this market.
For 2007, we focused on skid steers and backhoe loaders. The focus was further defined by dividing each equipment type into two size ranges:
Backhoe Loaders:
- Digging depth 14ft. and under
- Digging depth over 14ft.
Skid Steers:
- Operating capacity less than 1350 lbs.
- Operating capacity 1350 lbs. and over.
MacKay & Company estimates that there were approximately 385,100 hydraulic excavators, 367,300 backhoe loaders and 637,200 skid steer loaders in service in the U.S. in 2007. Total annual replacement parts demand generated by the three types of construction equipment covered in DataMac for 2007 is $3,852.5 million.
