DataMac Mexico 2011

Our initial field research in Mexico in 1992 indicated that the "vast majority" of heavy duty maintenance and service work was performed by the truck owner/maintainer with the balance completed by independent repair shops. Independent heavy duty parts distributors enjoyed nearly a quarter of this market, truck dealers 14%. There were 306,000 power units and trailers in operation at that time generating an aftermarket valued at $1.1 Billion (U.S.). The largest segment of this aftermarket was power generation (engine) parts and components, $435 Million (U.S.).

By 2007 dealers had significantly increased their share of the service market drawing most of this increase from the operator's shop. The Mexican commercial vehicle aftermarket had tripled in value from 1992 to a market of over $3.3 Billion (U.S.) and there was a nearly 18% increase in the number of trucks and buses operated. Both power transmission and undercarriage were somewhat more important, power generation somewhat less important in 2007. A major shift in emphasis on the parts business by truck dealers created a major shift by 2007. Dealers captured one-third of the business previously enjoyed by automotive parts outlets and several share points from the "other" category, primarily direct sales by manufacturers.

Four years have passed since that last comprehensive evaluation of the Mexican market; a new look into the truck and bus market in Mexico will be a key factor in planning for growth in Mexico, considering issues like:

  • How has the overall market changed since 1999, 2004 and 2007, what has happened to the individual sectors of the market – and what are the significant changes?
  • What are the trends that are reshaping vehicle maintenance practices and component purchasing practices – and what actions do suppliers need to take to capitalize on these shifts and trends parts?
  • What are the opportunities for growth in the Mexican heavy duty parts and service markets?

The objectives of this study are to provide participants with a comprehensive
"DataMac style" overview of the commercial vehicle parts and service market in Mexico. As with previous MacKay & Company studies in Mexico, the commercial vehicle market is defined as medium duty trucks (9 - 15 tons), heavy duty trucks (over 15 tons), buses (medium and heavy duty) and trailers.

We will profile 265 components with participating companies able to request additional products be added based on their specific needs and interest.

The upcoming 2011 research program will be the sixth time MacKay & Company has profiled the Mexican market. We will be able to provide five reference points in time to analyze this market where there are shifts and changes meriting such an analysis. This information will be included, when appropriate, as a tool to identify trends or highlight significant changes in the aftermarket. In the process, inventory levels, prices, margins, shifts in the customer base and a series of related issues will be evaluated in detail.
