Aftermarket Parts Branding Study

Over the past several years, MacKay & Company has explored high-level, brand-related questions with both fleet operators and parts and service channels, including dealers, distributors, and independent repair shops.

Fleet owners now face an expanding array of brand choices when replacing parts. Fleets indicate increased awareness and use of “value line,” or second-tier, brands, with usage rising steadily over time. Likewise, businesses that sell parts report that non-OEM brands account for roughly one-third of all parts sold, with variation by component.

As product offerings and adoption continue to grow, a renewed examination of parts branding will help clarify evolving dynamics in the current and future parts market.

Some of the key issues to be examined include:

  • Familiarity with and use of parts’ brands

  • Ability to identify parts manufacturers

  • Brand perception

  • Brand quality

  • Use of brand as it relates to vehicle age, vocation, life of vehicle

  • How brand usage is determined

Are there specific brand questions that you and your team are interested in? Our tailored study addresses those questions that are most important to you.

DataMac 2025 Lube Report

MacKay & Company has released its 2025 DataMac® Truck Medium & Heavy-Duty Lube Report, offering detailed analysis and forecasts for lubricant usage across Classes 6–8 vehicles in the U.S. commercial truck market. The report provides comprehensive data on lubricant consumption, pricing trends, brand preferences, and market channel performance.

The report finds that total lubricant consumption in the heavy truck segment declines slightly by 0.5% compared to 2024 due to fewer miles driven. Diving into the product detail, engine oil consumption increases 3.3% to reach 174.2 million gallons. This growth is supported by greater adoption of synthetic oils, particularly among newer equipment models. Meanwhile, coolant volumes hold steady at 20.4 million gallons, and gear oil usage declines slightly to 14.3 million gallons. Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) experiences a modest 2.6% decrease, though pricing saw a corresponding uptick.

The 2025 DataMac® Truck Medium & Heavy-Duty Lube Report is now available to subscribers through MacKay & Company’s online portal at mackayco.com. Current subscribers can expand their market coverage to include agricultural, construction, and light-duty segments at discounted rates.
